Frequently Asked Questions:

Are FIBC bulk bags watertight or waterproof?

Being one of the most versatile bulk containers on the market, this is a very good question. The majority of our FIBC bulk bags are made with a woven polypropylene and this type of fabric is unfortunately not watertight or waterproof.

Frequently these types of containers may be coated with a polypropylene laminate which offers some water resistance but that does not mean these containers hold liquids. While a polypropylene laminate can be an adequate barrier from moisture, its main purpose is to further prevent fine dry material from leaking. Please always test bags to see if they would be sufficient for any or your needs.

Are FIBC bulk bags the right packaging option for my business?

FIBC Bulk bags are an excellent option when considering the best containment choices for your needs. Bulk bags are easily stored flat. They can be transported on service vehicles without taking up any space. They can be filled and stored inside of a building in a dry location. Filled bulk bags can be strapped to a pallet for long distance transportation or easily loaded for air transport. These are excellent for ships and sending abroad. FIBCs are good for products that are dry, non conductive, and non flammable. Always carefully consider all of the variables needed when choosing the proper containment. Testing is key and getting proper advice is critical for some products. Lastly, filled bulk bags can shift weight and present a danger to others when not used correctly. Learning the proper steps to filling, discharging, transporting, and storing is advised.

What material are FIBC bulk bags made from?

100% polypropylene.

What is a duffel top?

A duffle top is a skirt closure on a bulk bag. They are usually about 30 inches high and an attached tie allows the user to fully open or close the top as needed.

What is a fill or discharge spout?

A spout is most often 14″ in diameter and 18″ long. The spout is designed to minimize dust as the bag is being filled or discharged and can be customized.

Can a bulk bag be patched?

Here at FIBC Bag Store we do not advise to patch any FIBC bulk bags. We will openly discourage you from using any damaged bags and only advise using new and undamaged FIBC bulk bags.

Can bulk bags be reused?

Bulk bags can be reused under certain conditions. It is recommended that the bag be designed for reuse. Bags could have a defect such as a small hole or unstable loops which would make them unsuitable for reuse. With all of this said however,

Can a bulk bag be recycled?

Yes. They are made from 100% polypropylene and can be recycled.

What is the difference in an open top, duffle top, and a spout top?

An open top bag is simply an open bag without any top closure. A duffle top is a light weight polypropylene fabric which is the same diameter as the four panels of the bag sewn on the top edge of the bag to secure the product. The spout is most used on funnel filling plants where the product goes directly into the bag with minimum dust emission while the bag is being filled at the filling machine or point.

What does SWL mean?

SWL is an abbreviation for safe working load. A bulk bag’s safe working load is the amount of weight that the bag is rated and tested to hold safely.

What does 5:1 SF mean?

A standard bulk bag is rated at a 5:1 Safety Factor Ratio as per ISO 21898 norms, which means that the bag is specified to hold 5 times the amount of the bags safe working load. A 5:1 Safety Ratio is for single use or single trip bags. Bags that are designed for multi-use or multi-trip bags are made with an increased SF ratio. The SF for a multi-trip bag is 6:1.

What is a UV inhibitor?

UVI stands for Ultraviolet Inhibitor, which is an additive that is added to the resin during the extrusion process. It assists in protecting the bulk bag from harmful effects of UV rays, protecting it from degrading and becoming unstable and unsafe.
